Margaret Cotton, Senior Regional Director, Alpha USA

Workshop: Thursday, September 14, 2017

Margaret Cotton serves as the South Carolina Regional Director for Alpha USA. Alpha is a global non-denominational ministry which runs in 169 countries and has had over 29 million participants. Generally experienced over 11 weeks, Alpha provides a teaching followed by interactive small group discussions. Guests explore such questions as “Why does God allow pain and suffering?”,”Does God heal today?” and “Why and how should I share my faith?”

Transformational for believers and non-believers, Alpha provides an easy way to provide ministry in your workplace. Margaret will share her expertise and walk our God in the Workplace group through a mini-workshop showing how to incorporate Alpha into your business, home or anywhere you’d like to use it!

Prior to joining the Alpha organization full time in late 2009, she had 30 years’ experience in the training and media fields. As the SC Director, Margaret is the liaison between Alpha USA and churches and organizations who want to run the Alpha Course.

Across the United States, cities in very state are becoming more post-Christian – some at a faster rate than others. Young people are leaving the church in great numbers. There is a growing need for a tool like Alpha. According to Barna Research, estimates are that 50% of Alpha participants make a commitment or recommitment to Christ. “Alpha has impacted our church culture by bring evangelism back to the forefront of what we do.” (Jon Tyson, Trinity Grace Church) And Billy Graham believes that the workplace is the greatest area for mission.

Taking Alpha at her church was a transforming time for Margaret and after participating in Alpha, she became actively involved as a volunteer leader, which then eventually evolved into this full time position. Alpha is a 501C3 organization and Margaret raises funds from individuals, foundations and churches in order to do the work in South Carolina. This allows her to train and coach with little or no cost to the church or organization.

Globally, over 29 million people have taken an Alpha course, 169 countries are currently running the course and it has been translated into 112 languages. In the US, the course is run in all 50 states, and over 3 million guests have attended.

The Alpha Course has many specialty ministries as well – Alpha in the Workplace, for Prisons, for the Military, Catholics, for Youth and Campus as well as a Marriage Course and a Parenting Course. Alpha in the Workplace is designed to help individuals or companies bring their faith into the workplace. Having been in the secular work force for many years, this is an area where Margaret feels Alpha can have tremendous impact.
